How we compare machinery
We haven't tested these machines: we compare published specs and official guidance. This page explains what that means and how to read our comparisons.
What we compare
- Makers' published specs. For each machine we take the figures from the maker's UK product page or manual: horsepower and PTO power, linkage category, lift capacity, weight, tonnage, maximum log length, branch diameter, working width, payload and towing limit. Each comparison shows the date we checked the specs.
- Official guidance. Safety points come from HSE and the maker's manual. Road, licence and towing rules come from GOV.UK, DVLA, DVSA and the Highway Code.
- Your land and jobs. Our calculators start from what you'll do with the machine, then match it to the makers' figures.
What we don't do
- We don't test machines, and we never say we have.
- We don't give star ratings or scores.
- We don't rank dealers, and dealers don't pay us.
- We don't give finance, leasing or insurance advice.
How to read our comparison lists
Every "best" heading says what it compares on, for example "compared on tonnage, maximum log length, power source and orientation from makers' UK specs". A machine high on one list isn't better in general: it's a closer match to those criteria.
Prices
Prices come only from official brand UK stores or official affiliate feeds, with the date checked, or from you in the calculators.
