Describe a representative batch

Tell the supplier what material you expect to handle, how it arises and how often. Branch shape, mixed material and the way it is presented can matter to the proposed system. Do not describe an entire workload using only its largest branch diameter.

Photographs can support an enquiry, but ask the supplier to assess the actual material and intended use. Do not collect or manipulate hazardous material merely to create a sample.

Ask what the specification means

Request the manufacturer's conditions behind any capacity claim. Establish which materials are accepted and excluded, and how the proposed model is intended to be used. A quoted maximum does not promise the same throughput for every batch.

For a PTO-driven proposal, collect the documented tractor requirements and use the implement matcher as an initial comparison. Obtain confirmation of the full combination from a competent supplier.

Include movement and chip destination

Plan where material arrives, where the machine may be used and where the output goes. Ask whether handling equipment or additional space is required. Agree the destination before producing a large quantity of chip.

If removal or reuse is planned, check the requirements for the material, activity and location with the relevant authority or adviser. Do not assume plant material has no environmental restrictions.

Compare ownership with a service

Ask a contractor what preparation they require and what their quote includes. Compare the completed job, including movement and output handling, with the cost and responsibilities of ownership or hire.

HSE's forestry machinery guidance emphasises competent operation. This article is not a feeding, clearing-blockage or maintenance procedure.

Keep the decision grounded

Write down which material the proposed system can handle, which it cannot, and the expected workflow. A suitable enquiry connects real material and a viable destination; it does not select a machine simply because its maximum diameter is the largest within budget.
