Read the return conditions before collection
The end of a hire starts with the agreement. Check the return deadline, collection arrangements, fuel or charging conditions, cleaning requirements and how damage or missing items are assessed. Ask questions before taking the machine away, while changing the plan is still straightforward.
Keep a copy of the initial condition record and the list of supplied accessories. A photograph is useful context, but it does not replace the hire company's reporting process.
Leave time to finish safely
Plan the last job so the machine can be stopped, made safe and prepared for return without rushing. Do not extend work into unsuitable conditions simply because collection is approaching. Contact the provider early if the agreed schedule is no longer realistic.
If a defect or incident occurs, follow the provider's instructions and stop use where required. Do not attempt an unauthorised repair to make the return appear uncomplicated.
Follow the agreed cleaning method
Use the machine instructions and hire company's requirements. Ask what cleaning is appropriate and where residues or wash water should go. A pressure washer is not automatically suitable for every surface or component.
Preparation must not expose you to moving parts, stored energy or unsupported equipment. Refer to HSE's safe-maintenance guidance and obtain competent help for work outside your capability.
Reconcile the supplied items
Check the accessories and documents against the original list. Record the meter reading or other usage information requested, and retain evidence of the return or collection. If an item is missing, say so rather than improvising a substitute.
Ask for discrepancies and any proposed charges to be explained through the normal process. Keep the final invoice with the hire record.
Learn from the hire
Record actual working time, transport costs and whether the machine achieved the intended result. Note what would change in a future booking. A well-documented hire gives you better evidence for the next hire-versus-buy decision than a memory of whether the week felt busy.
